What is Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling

Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling (HIR) rehabilitates asphalt pavement by reusing the existing road surface on-site. The process heats, rejuvenates, mixes and repaves the existing asphalt directly on the road. The HIR hot milling process preserves aggregate gradation, enabling recycled mixes with >80% RAP. HIR reduces cost, new materials, hauling and emissions.

Limitations of Conventional Mill and Pave

Conventional mill and pave removes the existing surface by cold milling and replaces it with new hot mix asphalt. Cold milling alters aggregate which limits the the RAP content to 15–40% in conventional mixes. As a result, some reclaimed asphalt is downcycled rather than reused in new pavement surfaces.
